Contal Services

Website Design

Project Overview

Contal Services is a Brisbane-based business group operating across technology, travel, property, and training. Founded in the 1980s as a travel business, it evolved into a multi-disciplinary organisation with a strong focus on in-house software development and digital platforms. Contal designs and operates its own systems across industries it actively works in, including travel services, hospitality technology, and business management solutions.

The group was seeking a complete redesign of its website. The work included updated layouts, visual design, and responsive behaviour.

Digital Design

Why was a redesign needed?

The existing website was significantly outdated, both visually and functionally. Put bluntly, it looked like something from the late 1990s or early 2000s, which failed to reflect the nature of the business or modern expectations. A complete overhaul was needed to better position Contal for continued success. This meant rethinking the site’s structure and presentation so it could more effectively support the organisation’s current operations and future direction.

Sitemap

The sitemap was restructured to establish a clear information hierarchy and intuitive top-level navigation aligned with Contal’s core areas. The main navigation was rationalised into five primary sections: What We Do, Our Products, Our People, Partner With Us, and Contact Us, with related content grouped logically beneath each section to support discoverability and ease of navigation.

The Redesign

The original Contal Services website was defined by a restricted, fixed-width layout and significant visual clutter that obscured the group’s diverse capabilities. My wireframing process focused on “breaking the box,” introducing a modern, full-width grid system that allows the content to breathe. By replacing the dated 1990s aesthetics with a clean, modular structure, I created an intuitive user experience that aligns with Contal’s status as a forward-thinking technology and services leader

Identity

While the core logo was established by an external agency, my task was to build a comprehensive visual ecosystem around it. I expanded this starting point into a full-scale brand identity, selecting a bold primary and secondary color palette and a modern typographic pairing to ensure legibility and professional appeal. To give the brand more personality, I activated the bird from the logo as a brand hero. Inspired by iconic identifiers like the ING lion, this character serves as a consistent visual anchor throughout the site, injecting character and motion into a traditionally dense corporate sector.

The Finished Design

The completed design resolves the visual clutter and “boxed-in” constraints of the past by embracing a modern, full-width grid system. “Breaking the box” allowed for the creation of a sophisticated information architecture where Contal’s diverse capabilities including travel technology and property development finally have room to breathe. By pairing a clean, modular structure with a high-contrast colour palette, the final site provides an intuitive, professional journey that transforms a complex organisational portfolio into a streamlined digital experience.
